You have been Cordially invited to view life in the south.
When thinking about a southern woman you imagine Dolly Parton or the Daisy Duke herself. However what if I told you southern women are more than the pretty face and southern hospitality. We are leashed to history, good and bad. In this body of work I am more than just a viewer, I am an insider. Growing up in North Carolina shaped my mind just like other little girls of the “proper way of life” with faith, actions, and their way of living. We are told at a young age to act like a lady. That the higher the hair the closer to God we can be and to always find the perfect husband at a young age that comes from a “good family.” However there is a dark side of the southern way of living that you won't see because of the hospitality. It all happens behind closed doors. In North Carolina 1-5 people daily die from an opioid overdose. Not counting the numbers of empty liquor bottles to coat the pain that no one talks about. I brought this project to light in a staged kitchy style, all at a dining room table party. The reason behind this is due to how important it is to bring faith and family together and that is by food.
Pearls are a girls best friend
Find yourself a good southern boy
The higher the hair the closer to God
Bless your heart
You're just a diamond in a rhinestone world
I’m fixin’ with Hillbilly’s and bananas
My pleasure
